When is an evaluation appropriate? 

Here are some questions that can help to guide your decision:

1. What led you to ask this question now? Is it a reaction to something specific that happened recently? Did your child’s teacher suggest that you get an evaluation? Or has your child brought up concerns about school? 
2. How long have you been concerned? Have you been worried for a while, or are your concerns very new? All kids struggle in school from time to time. Sometimes, though, kids keep struggling. If that happens, an evaluation could be a good next step.
3. How are your child’s challenges getting in the way at school? Be specific when answering this question for yourself. Is your child struggling with a certain subject, like reading or math? Is your child struggling socially or having trouble concentrating in class?
4. Are the challenges affecting your child outside of school? Have you noticed the same kinds of difficulties at home, too? Have you heard about the same kinds of challenges from multiple teachers? Or maybe your child struggles in the same areas yearly, even with different teachers.

What are the ages of the students you evaluate? 

We provide individualized assessments for students ages three (developmental screenings) through college age and adults.

How do I schedule an evaluation? 

New clients can either contact us through the website or directly by telephone (609-771-3180). Our director will be in touch to discuss your concerns and determine whether or not testing will meet your needs. 

What are your office hours? 

Office hours vary. Individual diagnosticians schedule their own appointments (testing and feedback). There are weekend appointments during the school year and summer hours. 

How long is the evaluation appointment? 

Since each evaluation is individualized, the time required will vary from two to six hours. The evaluator will discuss testing time needed prior to setting up your testing appointment. 

Do I need to stay during the testing? 

Parents are encouraged to wait for their child in the lounge area. Parents do not typically accompany their children to the testing room. 

What should we bring with us to the testing appointment? 

You will not need to provide anything other than the paperwork we send to you when we set up your child’s evaluation. Please bring that complete input sheet with you to your appointment. At the appointment, you will be asked to fill out a few more information sheets and a parent checklist. A teacher checklist is also provided if you would like input to be placed into the report. This is an optional step. On the day of the testing, we have water bottles and snacks in our office. If your child has an allergy or food preference, you are welcome to send a snack with them to the testing appointment.

How do I prepare my child for the evaluation? 

Students are often anxious about the testing process. Please explain to them that they will be doing some work to find out their academic strengths and weaknesses in order to make parents and the school aware of any extra support they may need. Also, the diagnosticians will do work with them to find out how they think and solve problems. There are test items that will be difficult, but when things become too challenging, that probably means they have not learned it yet and that is “Okay”. 

What can I expect after testing? 

You can expect answers to the questions that prompted the evaluation. Within one to two weeks after testing, you will meet with the director to review the findings, discuss the test results, and talk about the recommendations based on the evaluation. Parents are given a detailed written report with the information above clearly spelled out that can be shared with educators. We allow enough time during feedback to review the test results and answer parent questions. Older students are welcome to attend the feedback or a separate conference can be scheduled for a fee. Feedbacks typically run one to two hours. 

How do I pay for the evaluation? 

Fees may be paid for by check. We cannot accept credit cards at this time. One half of the testing fee is requested at the time of the testing; the balance can be paid at the time of the feedback. Reports cannot be released unless your testing is paid in full. 

Do you take insurance? 

No, we are a Fee for Service provider, and therefore we do not accept insurance and we are affiliated with any insurance plans. However, your insurance provider may reimburse you for some portion of your testing. If reimbursement is important, you will need to contact your insurance company before you schedule your testing appointment. Please ask if they will cover the cost of a psycho-educational evaluation. The procedure code is CPT: 96102 (testing conducted by a technician). We will provide a detailed invoice with the CPT and applicable  diagnosis codes when your account is paid in full.
