Academic coaches provide structure and support to students who are not succeeding in school for any of the following reasons:
Disinterest
Disorganization
Difficulty with homework
Lack of planning on projects
Time management
Lack of strategies
Difficulty recalling information on tests
Anxiety about tests
Our academic coaches are all certified special education teachers with experience in working with these types of problems, often called executive processing issues. They will help your child develop personal strategies to manage their issues to prepare them to work indepedently in the future.
Our tutors will work with you and your child to identify his/her exact learning challenges and to develop goals to meet those needs. They will support your child on his/her current assignments while teaching the learning strategies needed by all students to succeed on their own.
Structured Literacy is the official name for Orton Gillingham, Multisensory, Wilson and other programs approved by the International Dyslexia Association. These programs are the "gold standard" of intervention for students with dyslexia or severe reading/writing disabilities.
The New Jersey Dyslexia Handbook recommends the use of Structured literacy programs stating, “There has been widespread consensus in the dyslexia community since the 1990’s, that providing intervention by a skilled teacher using direct, systematic and sequential instruction, focused on the structure of language will enable students with dyslexia to make the greatest progress in reading achievement. This type of intervention, also called multisensory structured language instruction, when provided with sufficient intensity by a teacher who has the appropriate level of competence in delivering instruction, monitoring progress and providing feedback to ensure consistent quality of instruction (Moats, 1994, 2004), will result in the highest level of achievement.”
A full explanation of the components of a structured literacy program can be found in the New Jersey Handbook for Dyslexia at https://www.state.nj.us/education/specialed/dyslexia/NJDyslexiaHandbook.pdf
Our specially certified professionals will work with you and your child to maximize reading growth. The tutor will provide you with short term objectives and long term goals as well as progress reports. The tutor will also coordinate with your child’s teacher if you wish. Such coordination can maximize growth.
